About the venue

The Tomb of Akbar, located on the outskirts of the city of Agra, is one of the most distinguished Mughal funerary monuments. Planned by Emperor Akbar during his lifetime, it presents a refined architectural vision that was later completed by his successor Jahangir, who added the marble upperwork.

Historical Background

Akbar initiated the complex by completing the first storey and laying out a garden that reflected imperial ideals of order and cosmology. Jahangir continued the project after his father’s death, constructing the marble top storey and finalizing the arrangement of cloisters, arches, and decorative schemes that defined the monument’s character.

Location and Significance

Situated within a landscaped precinct, the tomb embodies Mughal dynastic prestige and commemorative intent. Its pyramidal massing, symbolic plan, and integration of garden design exemplify the evolving expression of imperial identity during the early seventeenth century.

Architectural Materials and Design

The structure rises in five storeys, with red sandstone used throughout except for the marble uppermost level. Cloisters surround the ground floor, articulated by massive arches and piers. The cenotaph below ground bears carved floral and arabesque patterns, while Quranic inscriptions frame the vestibule. Four gateways mark the cardinal axes, the southern one serving as the principal entrance, and the facades display extensive inlay and mosaic ornamentation.

This place is mausoleum of Akbar the great and his wives. The tomb of Akbar has got such a beautiful carvings and an architectural marvel of the Mughals. Every stone every corner is designed so thoughtfully and has a story behind it. History calls Akbar the great and it was an opportunity for us to visit and see his vision of that time. He himself had created this place as resting place for him and his family. His tomb is very plain and subtle. It is said that he asked not to have any carvings etc on his tomb. Hire a tour guide who will tell the relevance of each stone, the story behind this building. There is so much peace and calmness at this place. The road to Sikandara is very distorted because of ongoing metro construction. Buy tickets online or at the window.Read More

Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra is a magnificent blend of Mughal architecture and serene landscape. Built in memory of the great emperor Akbar, the monument reflects his philosophy of cultural harmony through its fusion of Islamic, Hindu, and Persian design elements. The grand gateway, intricate carvings, and peaceful gardens make it a calm and less crowded alternative to other monuments in Agra. The entry fee is generally around ₹20 for Indian visitors (subject to change). Security and baggage checking are conducted at the entrance. Large bags, food items, tobacco products, sharp objects, tripods, and drones are prohibited inside the premises. It’s advisable to carry minimal belongings for a hassle-free visit. The expansive garden complex, often dotted with deer and peacocks, adds to the tranquil atmosphere. A visit here offers not just architectural beauty but also a reflective glimpse into the legacy of one of India’s greatest rulers.Read More

The tomb of Akbar, the third Mughal emperor, is located in Sikandra, Agra. The tomb was built by his son Jahangir between 1605 and 1613, but its development was initiated by Emperor Akbar himself. There are four entrances to the tomb, the southern gate being the largest. It has four white marble spire-topped minarets, similar to those of the Taj Mahal. The buildings of the tomb are mainly built of dark red sandstone, which is enriched with the characteristics of white marble. Intricate geometric patterns, Persian calligraphy and delicate lattice screens can also be seen in the complex. Akbar's tomb is a magnificent example of Mughal architecture and one of the most peaceful historical structures in Agra. It offers a glimpse of the Mughal Empire. The main tomb is located within the vast Charbagh. It is very easy to spend time with family in peace in this huge garden. This structure is very well maintained. The architectural style of this mausoleum is so charming that you cannot take your eyes off it. This is a must visit place if you go to Agra. Time : 6 am - 6 pm Parking : Available Entry Fee : Indian / SAARC / BIMSTEC - 30 Rs. (Offline), 25 Rs. (Online) Foreigners ( Other Country) - 310 Rs. (Offline), 260 Rs. (Online)Read More

A Hidden Gem in Agra - Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra. A must-visit place if you're in Agra or Sikandra. The entire complex is excellently maintained and surprisingly peaceful and serene. For just 30 INR entrance fee, you get so much value. We spotted deer grazing and peacocks dancing inside the gardens - it adds so much charm to the place. Best time to visit: Winter afternoons are perfect. It’s also magical if you go during light rain, or on summer evenings when it cools down. Timings: Open till sunset. Perfect for a quiet, heritage walk away from the Taj crowds. Highly recommend adding this to your Agra itinerary.Read More
