About the venue

The Archaeological Museum of Halebidu in Karnataka preserves the artistic and cultural legacy of the Hoysala period. Established by the Archaeological Survey of India in the early 1970s, it is set within the sacred precincts of the Hoysaleshwara Temple complex and presents a distinguished collection of material heritage from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries CE.

Collections

The museum safeguards more than 1,500 sculptures, inscriptions, architectural fragments, and temple relics. Its closed sculpture gallery and open-air section together reveal the refinement of Hoysala craftsmanship.

Notable exhibits include an eighteen foot high image of a Tirthankara recovered from a ruined Jaina basadi, along with celebrated forms such as Govardhanagiridhari Krishna, Dancing Shiva, Veena Saraswati, and a dynamic figure of Ganesha in dance. Inscriptions in Kannada and Sanskrit illuminate the region’s social, political, and religious life.

The archeological museum, located in Halebeedu, is just a few metres away from the main temple. It is easy to spot and is managed by ACI. It is open only until 5pm in the evening, and houses several artefacts. The artefacts are well preserved and they provide information to all the visitors too. The museum is spread across a huge area, with a gallery and an open space.Read More

This Museum is in the same Hoysaleeswara temple complex on the west side. Has an entry ticket of Rs.5, but the sad part is it needs to be paid online, filling up your details in a page, not sure how many would like/can do that, And on top of that a staff enters all names manually and takes snapshot of the tickets wasting time, ASI can simplify entry. 🙏 Timing is from 9am to 5pm (Friday holiday) Many sculptures and stone inscriptions are kept neatly in open air and indoor galleries. Since most of them are similar to whatever already seen at the temple it is not that intriguing, except for few metal and wooden elements. Can see at your own pace, its self explanatory, no guides. Would be good for history and art enthusiasts 👍Read More
