About the venue

Hauz Khas Complex is a historic ensemble in Southern Delhi, exemplifying the city’s Islamic architectural and cultural heritage. It served as a center of education, worship, and royal patronage, reflecting successive influences of medieval rulers on urban planning and civic infrastructure.

Historical Background

The complex originated with the construction of the Hauz-i-Alai water tank by Alauddin Khalji to supply water to the inhabitants of the area. Later, Firuz Shah Tughluq desilted the tank, repaired it, and erected numerous buildings along its southern and eastern banks. Successive rulers, including Sikandar Lodi in A.D. 1507, contributed to repairs and embellishments. The tomb of Firuz Shah exemplifies this continuity, bearing inscriptions and decorative work that mark historical interventions over centuries.

Location and Significance

Situated in Southern Delhi, the complex holds cultural, educational, and historical importance. Its monuments, including the tank, mosque, tombs, and pavilions, provide a roadmap of Delhi’s medieval rulers, showcasing the evolution of Islamic urban architecture in India.

Architectural Materials and Design

Constructed using rubble masonry and plaster, the tomb of Firuz Shah is square in plan with high, slightly battered walls and a lofty dome. The intrados, dome ceiling, and squinch-pendentives are adorned with intricate plasterwork, including incised Quranic inscriptions over the southern doorway, accompanied by decorative characters and paintings. The complex also features 13th-century pavilions, mosques, and ancillary structures, harmoniously integrating functional and aesthetic elements of medieval Islamic architecture.

Hauz Khas Fort is a must-see if you want a peaceful escape right in the heart of Delhi. The 14th-century ruins are full of history, giving you a cool peek into the city's medieval past. What makes this place special is the awesome view from the top of the fort—it looks out over a beautiful lake surrounded by green, making it perfect for photos or just chilling at sunset. Winter's the best time to go so you can comfortably check out the big complex and enjoy the cool breeze, but it's still a beautiful, charming spot all year. Totally recommend it for a great mix of old stuff and nature.Read More

Hauz Khas Village isn’t the same as before. Earlier you could just walk in freely but now there’s a ₹20 entry ticket and you have to book it online which feels a bit unnecessary. Also noticed a lot of entry points are blocked now so getting in isn’t as smooth as it used to be. That said, once you’re inside, the vibe is still nice : quiet, peaceful and a good break from Delhi’s usual rush. The lake and ruins still have that calm charm especially if you go at the right time. Just expect a bit more hassle at the entry now.Read More

The Hauz Khas Fort complex, located in South Delhi, originally began in the 13th century when Alauddin Khalji excavated the royal reservoir, Hauz-i-Alai, to supply the city of Siri. In 1352, Firoz Shah Tughlaq restored the silted tank and built the surrounding stone structures, including the massive L-shaped madrasa, a mosque, and his own tomb. Today, these picturesque ruins offer stunning lake views and merge history with the trendy vibe of Hauz Khas Village.Read More
