About the venue

The tomb of Lord Cornwallis in Ghazipur is a commemorative structure honoring his service in significant global and colonial events. It reflects the reverence accorded to him after his death on 5 October 1805 C.E. and stands as a stately architectural monument overlooking the Ganges.

Historical Background

Cornwallis was noted for his involvement in the American Revolutionary War and later for his tenure as Governor General of India. Following his death in Ghazipur, this memorial was constructed to preserve his legacy. The monument was formally declared a centrally protected monument in 1920 C.E.

Location and Significance

Located in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, the tomb commands a distinguished position near the Ganges. Its placement enhances its commemorative purpose and affirms the region’s historical association with Cornwallis.

Architectural Materials and Design

The structure features a dome supported by twelve columns rising from a circular platform. The dome bears ornamentation of an army cap and floral motifs. At the center lies a white marble bust of Cornwallis on a square base, encircled by sculpted figures of a Brahmin, a Muslim, a European, and a native soldier. An English epitaph rests below this raised element. Double storied gateways embellished with spears, bows and arrows, swords, and inverted cannons enrich the monument’s visual character.

You can go to this historical site on any day (except friday) and between 7am to 6pm. Don't waste your time in making plans in advance to visit this place as this is not a crowded place and you can visit directly. Furthermore there is also nothing to see here except the tomb. Going inside the main tomb hall is not allowed however you can go upstairs on the deck. The main tomb hall is locked, but you can have a close look at the tomb and photo clicking is allowed. PROS: 1. The lush green campus of this site is good for photoshoots, picnics, and small children to play. 2. You can sit and spend time in nature. CONS: 1. As compared to the ticket price (online 20/- and offline 25/-), the place is not worthy. 2. Usually couples come to this place to spend time together. PEOPLE WITH ZERO CIVIC SENSE HAVE WRITTEN THEIR NAMES MAKING THE MONUMENT DIRTY. Kindly refrain from doing this and report the same if you see someone doing this.Read More

As a student of Indian history, visiting the Tomb of Lord Cornwallis in Ghazipur was a pilgrimage of sorts. This isn't just a grave; it's a monumental piece of colonial architecture standing stoically in a quiet corner of Uttar Pradesh. The structure itself is magnificent, clearly inspired by classical Greco-Roman designs, reminiscent of a mausoleum fit for an emperor. The cenotaph, crafted by the renowned sculptor John Flaxman Jr., features a poignant depiction of Lord Cornwallis's life, flanked by a British soldier and a sorrowful Indian sepoy. The level of detail is astounding. The high dome, supported by massive Doric columns, creates an atmosphere of solemn grandeur. What truly struck me was the sheer scale and the statement it makes. It’s a powerful symbol of the British Empire's might and its deep, complex entanglement with India. Standing there, you can almost feel the weight of history. It is remarkably well-preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). For anyone interested in the history of the British Raj, the Permanent Settlement, or colonial architecture, this is an absolute must-visit. It's a somber, beautiful, and historically significant site. Review 2: From a Casual Tourist's Perspective Title: A Peaceful and Impressive Monument ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5) We visited the Tomb of Lord Cornwallis while passing through Ghazipur, and it was a surprisingly impressive stop. Located in a large, well-maintained garden, the tomb is a huge, white, dome-shaped building that looks like something you'd see in ancient Rome, not in a small Indian city. Pros: * Peaceful Atmosphere: The grounds are very quiet and green, making it a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for an hour. * Impressive Architecture: The building is massive and beautiful. It’s great for taking photos. You don’t need to be a history buff to appreciate its design. * Well-Maintained: The lawns are nicely manicured, and the monument itself is clean. It's clear the ASI takes good care of it. * Free Entry: There was no entry fee when we visited, which is always a plus. Cons: * A Bit Isolated: It's slightly off the main track, and there aren't many other tourist attractions right next to it. * Limited Information: There isn't much information available on-site for the average visitor. A quick Google search beforehand is helpful to understand who Lord Cornwallis was and why he's buried here. Overall, it's a beautiful and serene spot. Recommended if you are in or near Ghazipur and appreciate historical monuments and peaceful places. Review 3: From a Local Resident's Perspective Title: Ghazipur's Historic Gem - "Laat Saheb ka Maqbara" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) For us in Ghazipur, this isn't just a tomb; it's "लाट साहब का मकबरा" (Laat Saheb ka Maqbara), a landmark that has been part of our city's identity for generations. It is a popular spot for morning walks and a quiet place for families to spend an evening. The gardens surrounding the tomb are lush and provide a much-needed green space in the city. The monument itself is a source of local pride. We often tell visitors the story of how Lord Cornwallis, the Governor-General of Bengal, died here in Ghazipur in 1805 during his second term. His tomb is a testament to Ghazipur's historical importance. The ASI does a good job of maintaining the site. It is always clean and feels safe. It's more than just a historical site; it's a part of our daily life and a beautiful, calm oasis. Every resident of Ghazipur recommends a visit to anyone coming to our city. It's our most famous and well-preserved heritage.Read More
