The Udayagiri and Khandagiri hills near Bhubaneswar contain ancient Jain monastic caves that trace their origins to the 1st century B.C.E. and continued in use until the 10th to 11th century C.E. They represent an important early phase of Jain art, architecture and ascetic tradition in Eastern India.

Historical Background

Built under the patronage of King Kharavela, the caves once served as retreats for Jain monks and preserve teachings in the form of carvings and ornamentation on the walls. Several caves contain cells opening into courtyards and feature decorated doorways with pilasters, animal motifs and floral designs. The site also includes an apsidal chaitya on Udayagiri hill, marking an early stage of Jain religious architecture.

Location and Significance

Situated near Bhubaneswar in Odisha, the hills illustrate the spread of Jainism in the region. The Hathigumpha cave inscription of King Kharavela, carved on its roof, is the only such record in the Indian subcontinent and gives the monument exceptional historical prominence.

Architectural Materials and Design

Udayagiri houses notable double storey caves such as Ranigumpha, Svargapuri Manchapuri and Jaya Vijaya. Their sculptural schemes and layouts exemplify evolving monastic design, while the hilltops offer serene views that enhance the site’s contemplative atmosphere.

Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are among the most fascinating historical attractions in Bhubaneswar and a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient Indian history, archaeology, and architecture. These rock-cut caves, dating back over 2,000 years, were built during the reign of King Kharavela and served as residences and meditation sites for Jain monks. The Udayagiri Caves in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, are a spectacular 2nd-century BCE marvel. Carved out of sandstone hills under Emperor Kharavela, these 18 rock-cut caves served as a peaceful retreat for Jain monks. ## Why You Must Visit At Least Once * Ancient Artistry: You will see some of India's earliest rock architecture and stone carvings, including early depictions of Odissi dance forms in the Rani Gumpha cave. * Living History: You can stand right next to the famous Hathigumpha inscription, a massive ancient text written in Brahmi script that chronicles royal battles and ancient victories. * Incredible Views: The hill offers a stunning, peaceful sunset view where ancient heritage perfectly meets the modern city skyline. ## ASI’s Restoration Efforts The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) actively protects this delicate site by: * Stopping Traffic: Closing the main road between the hills to prevent vehicle vibrations from cracking the caves. * Chemical Cleaning: Using specialized, safe chemical treatments to erase moss and black crust caused by monsoon rains. * Eco-Upgrades: Adding green walking paths, better crowd controls, and electric shuttles to keep the site clean and sustainable. Udayagiri & Khandagiri Ticket Prices & TimingsTimings: Open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (best visited at sunrise or sunset). Entry Fee (Indian Citizens): ₹25 per person. Entry Fee (Foreign Tourists): ₹300 per person. Children: Free entry for kids under 15 years. Digital Payment Discount: You get a ₹5 discount per ticket if you book online via the ASI portal.Read More

A captivating walk through ancient history and rock-cut artistryVisiting the twin hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri was an incredible highlight of my trip to Bhubaneswar. These 2,200-year-old rock-cut caves face each other and offer two distinct experiences.Udayagiri (18 caves) is highly artistic and architecturally grand. Exploring the double-story Rani Gumpha (Queen's Cave) and reading the ancient inscriptions at Hathi Gumpha felt like stepping back into the era of King Kharavela. The carvings here are beautifully detailed and well-preserved.On the other hand, Khandagiri (15 caves) is steeper and has a deeply spiritual atmosphere, crowned by a serene, active Jain temple at the top. The panoramic view of the city from the summit makes the climb absolutely worth it. Quick Tips: Wear comfortable shoes with a good grip, as the rock steps can be uneven. Watch out for the monkeys on the Khandagiri side—keep your food and loose items securely inside your bag. A single entry ticket covers both hills, making it an incredibly affordable and rich cultural experience. Highly recommended for history buffs and architecture lovers!Read More

Visited the ancient Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves and it was a really unique experience. These caves are not just tourist spots, they carry a lot of history from the Jain civilization and are believed to be around 2000 years old. The stone carvings and cave structures still look impressive and give a glimpse of ancient architecture and meditation life. The atmosphere is peaceful, especially in the morning or evening. Climbing to the top gives a beautiful view of the city and feels refreshing. Some caves are small and simple, while a few have detailed carvings and historical importance. The place can get a bit crowded and there is a good amount of walking and climbing, so wearing comfortable shoes is a good idea. Overall, it’s a perfect place for people who enjoy history, heritage, and a little adventure together.Read More
