The Masroor Temple, situated in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, is a remarkable example of ancient Indian rock-cut architecture. Dating to the 8th century C.E., the temple complex is celebrated for its monolithic structures and intricate carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. It is often compared to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra.

Historical Background

The temple is believed to have been commissioned by the rulers of the Jalandhar dynasty of Punjab, who governed the Kangra region. Originally, the complex comprised nineteen free-standing temples, of which only a few remain following the devastating earthquake of 1905. Seventeen temples were carved from single rocks, while two stand independently on either side of the main complex.

Located in the Kangra hills, the temple serves as both a cultural and religious landmark. The central shrine, known as Thakurdwara, enshrines Lord Rama with Sita and Lakshmana. A beautiful and amazing temple which leads to provoking thoughts how this structure could probably be built in an era when machinery was not available in in midst of Forest area at quite a higher hill. Though the structure is destroyed by time, earthquakes and unknown reasons but it still gives reflection of grandeur it might be having centuries ago. Visited the Masroor Rock Cut Temple recently. The temple complex is historically significant and the rock-cut architecture is impressive. The surrounding views are beautiful and make for some good photographs. However, the overall experience was average. Basic facilities and maintenance could be improved, and there is limited information available on-site about the history of the temple. An Honest Review of the Masroor Rock-Cut Temples, Himachal Pradesh The Masroor Rock-Cut Temples are a group of monolithic Hindu temples located in the village of Masroor in Himachal Pradesh. I visited them on 30 June 2026 with my brother and his family. We started our journey from Paradise Woodland Resort, expecting to reach the temple in about two and a half hours. However, things did not go as planned. Google Maps led us in completely the wrong direction, taking us far away from our destination. After considerable confusion and with the help of a kind local resident, we finally found the correct route and reached the temple. Lesson #1: Never rely on Google Maps blindly, especially when travelling to lesser-known destinations. Cross-check the route with locals whenever possible. Upon arrival, we discovered that entry tickets (₹10 per person) could only be purchased online. There was no option to buy tickets at the counter. Lesson #2: Ensure your phone is charged, you have a stable internet connection, and sufficient UPI balance before visiting places that require digital payments. Before visiting, I had imagined the temple complex to be quite expansive, largely because I was subconsciously comparing it with the magnificent Elephanta Caves in Mumbai Harbour. In reality, the Masroor temple complex is much smaller than I had expected. That said, its intricate rock-cut architecture and historical significance are impressive in their own right. Fortunately, the weather was pleasant when we arrived. The sky was overcast, and a cool breeze made exploring the site enjoyable. One of the highlights is the rectangular water tank in front of the temples, which beautifully reflects the monument and offers excellent photography opportunities, particularly during the morning hours. We spent about an hour exploring the complex and admiring the craftsmanship. As we were leaving, however, the weather changed dramatically. The breeze disappeared, the clouds gave way to bright sunshine, and by the time we reached our car, we were drenched in sweat. Conclusion If you enjoy history, archaeology, or ancient Indian temple architecture, the Masroor Rock-Cut Temples are certainly worth a visit. The elevated location also offers beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding valley. However, I would strongly recommend visiting during cooler weather or early in the morning, as the site can become extremely hot once the sun is overhead. Overall, despite the navigation mishap and the summer heat, it was a memorable visit to one of Himachal Pradesh's lesser-known historical treasures.Read More

A lovely highlight of the visit is the temple pond, which has lots of fishes and adds to the peaceful atmosphere. The entry process is very smooth—the ticket is just ₹20 for Indian citizens, and you can easily purchase it online right at the time of your visit or beforehand. The management has done a great job with the facilities. There is ample free parking available, and the washrooms are very clean and well-maintained.
