The Kanheri Group of Caves, situated within Sanjay Gandhi National Park in the western suburbs of Mumbai, is one of India’s most significant Buddhist cave complexes. Carved from basaltic rock, the site reflects a long tradition of monastic residence and spiritual practice.

Historical Background

The caves were developed from the 2nd century B.C.E. to the 10th century C.E. and served as living quarters, meditation halls, and educational centers for Buddhist monks. Most belong to the Hinayana phase, when the Buddha was worshipped in an aniconic manner, though the site also preserves Mahayana stylistic features and a few fragmentary Vajrayana paintings.

Location and Significance

Located in Maharashtra’s historic landscape, the complex stands as a major center of Buddhist learning. Epigraphical records referring to an ancient dam and rainwater harvesting system highlight the community’s ingenuity and the site’s regional importance.

Architectural Materials and Design

The complex contains 110 excavations including chaitya grihas, viharas, water cisterns, and a stupa gallery. Its rock cut architecture demonstrates refined planning through carefully hewn halls, monastic cells, and an interconnected water system designed to sustain a large monastic population.

Visited during summer in scorching heat 🥵 with my 2 years old daughter at 11am. Here my review during summer time visit. ✔️For Kanheri Caves you'll need to go through the same gate as of the national park. The entry point to the Kanheri Caves distance is about 5km. You can take one of those vans that shuttles between the main gate and the cave entrance. It's a 15 minutes ride, operates every 20 minutes. First you'll need to pay the park entry fee (Rs113), the shuttle fee (Rs100 2 way)Bus, E buggy(₹140)and the Kanheri Caves entry fee (Rs25) . If you are traveling by private vehicles (car, bike etc), additional entry charges to be paid. You can drive all the way up to the cave entry point, from where you'll need to do a short trek to long trek to see the caves. Note the park timing (7.30am to 6pm) and the cave timings (9am to 5pm). Don't miss to catch the last van back to the main gate, if you depend on one. Both the park and the Kanheri Caves are closed on Mondays. 2) i purchased only for kanheri caves. Because i visited lot of wild safari. So to save my time i took only kanheri caves . ⚠️Here i did huge mistake. Don't neglect to buy ticket ride of buggy or bus. By seeing overcrowded for buggy and bus ride. I thought 5km is nothing .so i didn't purchased ride ticket and started walking. We covered 2.5 kms bywalk in heat waves🥵. Luckily one buggy driver stopped and helped us to get in. And told us to buy ticket dont go by walk. Within 6min we covered 2.5 km with help of E buggy. Once u reach kanheri cave entrance. ✔️Again u need to climb few steps for ticket counter . ●Most of the caves are about hindu gods sculptures and Buddhist. Take 4hrs to explore all caves. ● i have explored all caves except restricted caves. ● Finsihed my day at outside vendor fruits 😋 which kept me energetic, hydrated and healthy during this scorching heat 🥵.Read More
