Lalitagiri, located in Odisha, is a site of immense significance for Buddhist devotees. It forms part of the renowned Buddhist Triangle of Odisha, along with Udayagiri and Ratnagiri, also referred to as the Diamond Triangle.

Lalitagiri flourished as a prominent Buddhist monastic complex during the Mahayana period. Excavations have revealed its importance as a center for religious and educational activities. The site reflects centuries of Buddhist devotion and artistic expression in eastern India.


Location and Significance


Situated on a hill in Odisha, Lalitagiri is easily accessible and forms an integral part of the Diamond Triangle pilgrimage circuit. It is unique among Odisha Buddhist sites as the only location from which relic-caskets have been recovered, enhancing its spiritual and historical importance.


Architectural Materials and Design


The site comprises a hill-top stupa, four monasteries, an apsidal chaitya-griha, numerous Buddha sculptures, and votive stupas. Inscriptions, antiquities, and other precious art objects have been unearthed, reflecting the sophisticated craftsmanship and religious fervor of the era. Lalitagiri’s layout and artistic remnants illustrate the architectural and devotional traditions of Mahayana Buddhism.
