The original stupa predates the Mughal period and served as an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. In 1588 CE, Govardhan, son of Raja Todarmal and governor under Mughal Emperor Akbar, added an octagonal Mughal tower atop the stupa to commemorate Emperor Humayun’s overnight stay. Excavations have yielded rare artefacts, including images of Buddha and other statues, highlighting the site’s historical and archaeological significance. It was declared a centrally protected monument in 1907.

A Peaceful Green Escape in Varanasi – Sarnath If you want to experience a lush, green, and peaceful side of Varanasi, I highly recommend visiting Sarnath. It offers a refreshing atmosphere with plenty of greenery and open space, making it a great place to relax away from the busy city. Getting to Sarnath is quite easy. From Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station and the nearby bus stand, you can find several travel options, including three-wheelers and tuk-tuks. However, if you prefer a calm, comfortable, and cool ride, I recommend taking City Bus No. 107 from the Cantonment bus stand, which is very close to Varanasi Railway Station. The bus is fully air-conditioned, and the fare is very affordable—around ₹25. The only downside is that the service is not very frequent, so you may have to wait longer for the bus. While in Sarnath, don't miss the Sarnath Museum, which is also fully air-conditioned and offers an interesting glimpse into the area's rich history and heritage. For the best experience, I recommend visiting Varanasi during the winter months, starting around November, when the weather is much more pleasant for sightseeing. The Chaukhandi Stupa in Sarnath, is easy to locate. There is ample parking space available at the entrance too. The premises of the Stupa is well maintained and there are information bulletins all over the place too. The park is mostly visited by young couples, who are seen engaging in explicit activities inside the premises. This is not a family friendly place, and not suitable for kids too. The management should look into it and ensure moral policing of the place. This location has a prominent significance, and also has a rich history.Read More
