About the venue

Mariam uz Zamani’s Tomb stands as a refined testament to the Mughal Empire’s artistic vision and cultural synthesis. Commissioned by Emperor Jahangir in honor of his mother, the Rajput Princess of Amer and wife of Emperor Akbar, the monument presents a serene commemorative setting shaped by intricate craftsmanship and imperial aesthetics.

Historical Background

Mariam uz Zamani held a prominent place in the Mughal court, and her mausoleum reflects both her stature and the cross cultural ties of her lineage. Built during the early seventeenth century C.E., the structure embodies a thoughtful union of Hindu and Islamic traditions. Its three storey design includes a lower chamber containing the grave, a middle level with the cenotaph, and an upper terrace that once overlooked a cultivated garden.

Location and Significance

The tomb is located in Sikandra, near Agra in India, positioned close to the celebrated mausoleum of Emperor Akbar. Its placement within a Mughal Garden emphasizes harmony with the surrounding landscape and offers insight into familial bonds, political alliances, and memorial practices of the era.

Architectural Materials and Design

The square plan rests at the center of a traditional garden layout. Red sandstone clads the baradari facades in finely carved panels arranged in geometric patterns executed in bas relief. Each corner presents an ornamental octagonal tower, while the exterior walls bear delicate carvings that highlight the blending of two artistic cultures and enhance the monument’s enduring elegance.

It’s nearby to Akbar’s Tomb but many people don’t know it. Do visit if you are visiting Akbar’s tomb. It’s beautiful; more secluded and peaceful!!Read More

I think the reason I loved this place so much is that it was a lovely surprise. It was the first place for the day for me. The pictures don't give an amazing impression. But it is a decently big building, with a lot of detail, a staircase that leads down to the crypt, expansive gardens, and many repeated archways inside the structure. I would have loved to get up to the roof but access was locked.Read More

Compared to the other famous royal tombs in India, this one is underwhelming. Scale is smaller and there is significant external wear and tear.Read More

Good place to visit with family. Easy access. Need to purchase tickets which cost 25 inr with only upi payment. Historic place to teach kids about Mughal Architecture. Actually Mariam Uz Zamani title was given to Queen Jodha Bai by King Akbar. This tomb was built by her Son Jahangir after her death.Read More

Tomb of Mariam (Akbar's mother). Completely Hidden and lowkey, almost no crowd on weekdays, very tranquil place to sit or walk and enjoy the birds chirping. It's very close to Akbar's Tomb, just across the same road, 50-100m inside in the left. You have to take the ticket online (there is a counter here, but the guy sitting there will tell you the same thing 🤣).Read More
